Waarom handen wassen belangrijk blijft

Balans is belangrijk

What is pityriasis rosea?

Pityriasis rosea is a temporary, benign skin condition that mainly occurs in adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 30. It usually starts with one larger, round or oval red spot often on the torso, chest or back. This first spot is also called the 'birthmark' or 'herald patch'.

After one to two weeks, smaller pink or reddish-brown spots will appear around the first spot. They may flake a bit and sometimes be slightly itchy. In people with dark skin, the spots can be gray, brown or dark red in color. Not to be confused with psoriasis, which is a chronic skin condition in which the skin continuously produces new flakes. Pityriasis rosea is temporary, not contagious and heals on its own within six to eight weeks.

How do you recognize pityriasis rosea?

The rash often follows a recognizable pattern.

    • Eerst ontstaat één grotere, schilferige vlek.
    • Then several small, oval spots appear that appear to lie in the skin lines — sometimes in a kind of “Christmas tree pattern” on the back.
    • The spots may itch slightly, but are usually not painful.

In some people, the skin changes precede a few days of mild flu symptoms, such as fatigue or headache. Hence the nickname skin flu.

What causes Pityriasis rosea and what can you do about it?

The precise cause of pityriasis rosea is not known. Doctors think it is related to a viral reaction or a temporary disruption of the immune system. Sometimes stress also seems to play a role. Belangrijk om te weten: pityriasis rosea is not contagious. So you can't pass it on to others and it rarely happens twice.

If you suffer from itching or a tight feeling, you can provide extra support to the skin:

    • Moisturize daily with a mild, perfume-free cream or lotion. This helps keep the skin supple and can reduce itching.
    • Clean gently with a soft, hypoallergene douchegel without perfume or irritants. Avoid hot water, harsh soap and excessive rubbing.
    • Avoid perfumes or alcohol on the skin, which can dry or sting.
    • Sunlight is allowed, but in moderation. A little sun can help, but don't burn the skin.

In case of severe itching, the doctor can temporarily prescribe a menthol gel, cooling ointment or a light corticosteroid cream.

How long does Pityriasis rosea last?

Pityriasis rosea usually goes away on its own within six to eight weeks. In exceptional cases it may take three months for the skin to fully recover. The spots may remain lighter or darker than the rest of the skin for a while, but this will disappear over time.

Although pityriasis rosea is harmless, it is sometimes difficult to recognize. The rash resembles other skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis or a fungal infection. Contact your doctor if:

    • the spots are very itchy or painful,
    • you are not sure if it is pityriasis rosea,
    • the spots persist for more than three months.

The doctor can assess the skin and possibly examine a piece of skin (biopsy) to confirm the diagnosis.

Calm skin recovers fastest

Pityriasis rosea does not require any curative treatment, just some patience, mild care and gentleness for your skin. If you want to care for your skin during this period, use products without perfume, dyes or alcohol. Keep your skin calm and give it time to recover. Because calm skin recovers fastest💙

Onafhankelijke testen sinds 1997

At Hypogeen we have had our products tested for decades. In 1997 we started research at the AMC (Academic Medical Center) in Amsterdam. Our products are compared with other brands and tested on volunteers with different skin types.

Such tests are supervised by skin experts, such as Prof. Dr. J.D. Bos, specialist in skin diseases. The results not only provided insight into skin compatibility, but also helped us to further improve our formulas.

An example? Our hand cream was tested on 50 people with sensitive skin. Three participants felt a mild burning sensation upon application, which quickly disappeared. However, no participant had an allergic reaction, even after 78 hours of monitoring. These types of insights help us time and time again to make our products even better. Based on these results, we have further improved the formulas.

Additional tests for people with diabetes

People with diabetes need to pay extra attention to skin care. Their skin is often more vulnerable and recovers less quickly. Read more information about skin care for diabetes in our blog: The importance of foot care for people with diabetes. Testing on people with diabetes is therefore something that is certainly important.

Our Foot and Leg Cream was tested a few years ago on 50 people with sensitive skin. Three participants felt a mild burning sensation upon application, which quickly disappeared. After 48 hours, no one had an allergic reaction. However, two of the three participants who initially experienced a burning sensation developed a mild form of eczema with redness. Based on this test, we have further improved the formula.

Four years later, our updated Foot and Leg Cream was again tested, this time especially among people with diabetes. The test was commissioned by a German research agency and was carried out by the AMC. This independent study examined which product was best tolerated. The Hypogeen Foot and Leg Cream came out on top in the test and we received the Derma Award with Hypogeen. A recognition that we are proud of, because it shows that our product is not only effective, but also suitable for the most sensitive skin.

Are cosmetic products tested on humans?

Yes, and that is very normal. Animal testing is banned in Europe, so skin care products are tested on volunteers at a later stage of product development. This is always done under the supervision of dermatologists and via so-called patch tests: small amounts of the product are applied to the skin to check for allergic reactions.

More than just an award

We are proud of the Derma Award, but what really makes us happy are the many positive reactions from our customers. Our products are recommended by the Diabetes Association and are used by many pedicures in the Netherlands. Many people return after their first order and see Hypogeen as their favorite skin care brand. That is the best confirmation for us. Thanks for that! 💙

Why isn't scent the most important thing in baby care?

Let's be honest: a baby that smells wonderful after a bath is irresistible to many parents. But choosing a care product purely based on scent can have disadvantages. Many baby products contain ingredients such as perfume and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), a foaming agent known for its allergenic properties. These substances can cause irritations or allergic reactions, especially on sensitive baby skin.

Dry skin baby

The sensitivity of baby skin

A baby's skin is different from that of an adult. It is thinner, more fragile and less able to defend itself against external irritants. This makes perfume-free and hypoallergenic products the best choice. Even if your baby has no visible skin problems, using gentle products can help keep the skin healthy and prevent future irritations. With Hypogeen you choose safe, mild care, specially developed for the most sensitive skin.

Which Hypogeen products are suitable for babies and toddlers?

At Hypogeen we understand how important it is to develop products that are safe and mild, even for the youngest skin. Our formulas have been specially developed for people with sensitive or extremely dry skin, which also makes them suitable for babies and toddlers. The following products can be used with confidence:

  • Hypogeen Shower gel: A mild cleanser that does not dry out the skin and does not contain any irritants. Ideal for the bath or shower.
  • Hypogeen Shampoo: A gentle shampoo that cleanses your baby's scalp and hair without perfume or aggressive foaming agents.
  • Hypogeen Body Lotion: Hydrates and cares for the sensitive baby skin after the bath, without closing or irritating the skin.

All Hypogeen products are carefully formulated to be gentle and safe for the skin. They do not contain petrolatum, perfume, dyes, microplastics, parabens, silicones or cocamidopropyl betaine. This way you can take care of not only your skin, but also that of your children, with peace of mind.

How do fungal nails develop?

Fungal nails are caused by a fungal infection, also called onychomycosis, which often makes nails thicker, discolored and brittle. This infection is caused by dermatophytes, a type of fungus that thrives in moist and warm environments, such as in shoes and sports socks. Nail fungus can be caused by direct contact with fungi in, for example, swimming pools, gyms or sauna rooms, but also by a weakened immune system or wounds around the nail. It is a persistent infection that is difficult to clear on its own, so treatment is often necessary.

What is the process of repairing fungal nails?

Repairing fungal nails requires patience. Nails grow slowly, and in toenails it can take up to 18 months for a new nail to fully grow. During this period it is important to combat the fungus effectively so that the new nail can grow healthily without becoming infected again. This means treating regularly and keeping the nail bed dry and clean, as a moist environment promotes the growth of fungi.

Patience is important when using fungal nail oil

We sometimes get asked by customers why they do not see an immediate improvement after using ours Fungal nail oil have used. Many people think that fungal nail oil makes the currently affected nail "healthy" again, but that is not the case. Nail fungus oil works from within by fighting the fungus, tackling the infection in the nail bed and nail environment.

Build a new, healthy nail

Lime nail oil contains ingredients that ensure that the fungus does not have a chance in the new nail growth. The nail itself grows a little bit every day, and after about 2 to 3 weeks you will notice a healthy, new nail emerging from the cuticle. It is therefore a process in which the fungus-free new nail gradually replaces the old, affected nail. During this process it is essential to continue applying the oil consistently and keep the nail area as clean and dry as possible.

What is Tea Tree oil?

Tea Tree oil is a natural essential oil, derived from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia. This oil is known for its powerful antimicrobial properties and has been used for years in a variety of skin and nail care products. Tea Tree oil has a cleansing effect and is effective against bacteria, fungi and yeasts, making it a popular choice for the treatment of fungal nails.

How does Tea Tree oil work in fungal nail products?

Tea Tree oil is one of the few natural oils that can inhibit the growth of mold. In fungal nail products it helps to actively combat the fungus, so that the infection cannot affect new nail growth. Tea Tree oil not only acts on the fungus itself, but also helps keep the nail environment healthy. The oil prevents the nail from drying out and soothes the skin around the nail, which reduces irritation. As a result, it supports the natural recovery process of the nail.

What can you do to prevent fungal nails?

Prevention is of course better than cure, and fortunately there are some steps you can take to reduce the risk of fungal nails:

  • Wear breathable shoes that ventilate well to limit moisture, and choose cotton socks that absorb moisture.
  • Always dry your feet thoroughly after showering, especially between the toes, to avoid a damp environment.
  • Wear flip-flops in public areas such as swimming pools and gyms to avoid contact with mold and protect your nails.
  • Keep your nails short and clean regularly, and preferably do not use nail polish that seals the nail, as this can promote the growth of fungi.

If, despite the precautions, you have not been able to prevent fungal nails, which we expect since you are reading this blog, don't worry! Our Hypogeen fungal nail oil ensures that you can quickly put on your slippers again and walk barefoot without shame. __BRAND_HYPOGENIC__ fungal nail oil contains natural ingredients that have been proven effective in combating fungal nails. It is therefore not without reason that Hypogeen fungal nail oil is a favorite for our pedicures.

How diabetes affects the skin of the feet

Diabetes poses specific challenges when it comes to foot health. Disrupted blood circulation and an increased risk of nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can make wounds less likely to be noticed, resulting in an increased risk of infections. The influence of diabetes on the skin of the feet can become visible in the following ways:

  • Reduced blood supply can cause the skin to dry out more quickly, causing natural oils to not be produced sufficiently. This makes the skin susceptible to cracks or wounds, and the risk of infections increases.
  • The combination of dry skin and less blood flow often leads to cracks and calluses. This makes the skin more vulnerable and can lead to infections more quickly in people with diabetes
  • Diabetes often slows wound healing, meaning even small wounds require a lot of attention. This emphasizes the importance of daily monitoring and careful maintenance of the feet.

Tips for daily foot care for diabetes

Diabetic foot care requires an extra careful approach. Good voetverzorging is important for everyone, but for people with diabetes it is essential to pay attention to the feet daily to prevent problems. Below are some practical tips to keep your feet healthy:

  • Check your feet daily. Check every day for wounds, blisters, redness or swelling. Even a minor injury can quickly develop into a bigger problem with diabetes.
  • Wash your feet gently. Use lukewarm water and mild, hypoallergenic soap to cleanse the skin without drying it out. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent moisture from remaining, which increases the risk of infections.
  • Hydrate your skin. Diabetes can cause the skin to dry out more quickly. A mild, perfume-free cream will help keep the skin soft and supple, but avoid applying the cream between the toes as this can increase the risk of fungal infections.
  • Cut nails with care. Keep your toenails straight and short to prevent ingrown nails. Be careful when cutting to avoid wounds.
  • Wear well-fitting shoes. Choose shoes that support the foot and provide space to prevent friction. Avoiding pressure points is important to prevent blisters and wounds.

Hypoallergenic products for diabetic foot care

Hypoallergenic creams are often recommended for people with diabetes. These creams moisturize without irritating the skin and contain no fragrances or dyes, which reduces the risk of allergies. For this reason, Hypogeen is one of the brands recommended by pedicures and the Dutch Diabetes Association. Products from __BRAND_HYPOGEN__ are sold via living fully with diabetes.

  • __BRAND_HYPOGENIC__ Calluses and Cracks Cream: This cream provides intensive hydration and helps soften the skin. Due to its soothing effect, the cream helps to reduce cracks and calluses, making the skin less likely to develop cracks and vulnerable spots. The cream is perfume-free, which is ideal for sensitive skin.
  • __BRAND_HYPOGENIC__ Foot Bath Herbal Boost: This mild, hypoallergenic foot bath provides a refreshing boost for tired feet. It provides gentle, deep cleansing without drying out the skin and is safe for daily use.
  • __BRAND_HYPOGENIC__ foot cream: Our hypoallergenic foot cream deeply hydrates, which is essential for feet that dry out more quickly due to diabetes. The cream helps keep the skin supple and hydrated, and is gentle enough for daily use.
  • __BRAND_HYPOGENIC__ Foot and Leg Cream: This all-in-one cream moisturizes and protects both feet and legs. Ideal for diabetics who often suffer from dry skin, this cream provides long-lasting hydration and supports the skin barrier.

These hypoallergenic products have been specially developed for sensitive skin and do not contain any irritants such as fragrances or dyes. Regular use can contribute to healthier feet and help prevent common foot problems.

Foot care is a daily investment

Good foot care is an important daily habit for people with diabetes. By properly checking the feet, hydrating them and using the right products, you reduce the risk of problems and keep your feet healthy. With a few small adjustments to your daily routine, you can ensure that your feet are better able to withstand the challenges that diabetes brings. However, for people with diabetes it is important to regularly visit a specialist, such as a podiatrist or pedicurist. They can help identify any problems and provide advice on proper foot care.

What does hypoallergenic mean?

Hypoallergenic literally means “causing less allergies.” This means that the chance of a product causing an allergic reaction is smaller compared to other products. However, this does not mean that it is completely free from the risk of an allergic reaction. Every body reacts differently; What is safe for many can still cause a reaction in a few. That is why continuous research into ingredients is so important.

At Hypogeen our formulas are constantly tested and improved. We strive to keep the risk of an allergic reaction to the absolute minimum by paying careful attention to the ingredients we use and always looking for safer, skin-friendly alternatives.

Which ingredients are avoided in hypoallergenic products?

There are some ingredients that are known to be more likely to cause allergic reactions, especially in people with sensitive skin. Consider:

  • Perfume: Synthetic fragrances are one of the most common causes of allergic reactions.
  • Parabens: These preservatives can cause skin irritation in some people.
  • Petroleum jelly and silicones: Although not harmful, these ingredients can clog pores or cause irritation in sensitive skin types.

Are these ingredients always bad? Certainly not! Many of these substances play an important role in the effectiveness of a product and do not cause problems for most people. Yet at Hypogeen we opt for natural alternatives that have a similar effect, but with a smaller chance of an allergic reaction. Consider natural oils that are just as effective, but cause irritation less often.

Can I get an allergic reaction from Hypogeen products?

Although you are much less likely to have an allergic reaction from a Hypogeen product than from mainstream brands, we cannot guarantee that no one will ever experience a reaction. Even natural ingredients, such as essential oils, can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. An example of this is our Herbal Boost foot cream, which contains 100% natural lavender oil. Although lavender oil is known for its calming properties, it can still cause a reaction in a small group of people.

If you know you are sensitive to certain ingredients, such as lavender, we recommend choosing products that avoid these substances. That is why, in addition to the Herb Boost, we also offer a odorless foot cream and a Foot and leg cream without fragrances and colourants. We always clearly state which ones on our packaging and website ingredients are in our products, so that you can make an informed choice.

Always check the ingredients list

Ultimately, it is not about whether a product is presented as hypoallergenic or recommended by one of the many dermatologists with commercial interests. What really counts is that the skin care product does what it promises and is good for your skin.

At Hypogeen we do not use the label “hypoallergenic” as a marketing ploy. We believe in the power of our carefully developed formulas, based on decades of research and experience. By using our hypoallergenic skin care products, you minimize the chance of an allergic reaction. However, we always recommend that you check the ingredients list, especially if you have (extremely) sensitive skin. This way you ensure that you choose a product that really suits your skin. Can't figure it out, or are you not quite sure? Please contact us and one of our specialists will be happy to take a look with you.
